It is important to make sure your road sign knowledge is up-to-scratch prior to the Georgia DMV permit test, as 50% of the exam question will be dedicated to road signs and pavement markings. Every road sign you could be asked about during the DDS written test is listed on this page. As you can see – there is a lot to learn! With our fantastic free resources and guidance to show you the way, you can memorize every essential road sign and make sure you earn that learner’s permit first time around.

The GA permit test is split into two exams, which focus on rules of the road and road signs separately. To pass the overall assessment, students must answer at least 75% of the permit test questions on each exam correctly. If you score less than 15 out of 20 on the road signs written test, you will need to resit both sides of the exam, even if you earned a perfect score during the road rules segment. There are hundreds of possible road sign and pavement marking questions which could appear on the permit test paper so to guarantee a good performance, you will need to be able to recognize them all.

Studying road signs for the permit test must begin with learning about road sign categories. To make things easier for you, we have sorted the road signs you must memorize into their categories on this page. You should expect that the GA DDS written test will present you with road sign-related questions targeting each of the four road sign categories. These groupings are regulatory signs (which tell you about the rules of the road in a certain area), warning signs (which warn motorists of nearby hazards), work zone signs (which are set up around roadway work zones to enforce new road rules and warn of hazards) and guide signs (which provide route numbers, place names, nearby facilities and other important location-based information). All the road signs within a given category share similarities in shape and color, making it easy for road users to identify what type of sign they are looking at, even if they have never seen it before.

Being able to identify which category a road sign belongs to will also help you get through the 2019 Georgia DMV test! For instance, if you come up against an unfamiliar sign but recognize it as a warning sign based on its yellow diamond shape, you will be able to rule out some of the incorrect multiple-choice answers. The precise meaning of the sign should then be easy to figure out, based on the shape of the black symbol it contains and the remaining possible answers. To learn more about road sign categories and their meanings, work through the “Signs, Signals & Markings” chapter of our free GA driver’s education course!
